Some answers:
1.) Yup, it seems that the T5 is less prone to sludge. Doesn't rule it out completely though. Although this many years into its life, it probably would have sludged up already. Good oil change and maintenance records are key.
2.) They aren't THAT complicated once you get to know how they operate. They're quite logical in fact. They do need Tech 2 help for diagnostics and recalibration though, so if something breaks, it may not be 100% DIY. When I had my '01 SE vert, I spent a hefty amount getting some switches replaced, and then the tonneau u-joint shattered twice on me, so be prepared to spend some dough on it. They are generally pretty reliable though.
Can't help with a local mechanic, but definitely get it looked at by someone familiar with Saabs, either a dealer or indy. Not a run of the mill general mechanic by any means.
My best piece of advice to you is to check for leaks - both the water kind and the hydraulic fluid kind. My car had both. The interior side rails and header of the top filled up with water whenever it rained and soaked me when I started moving. My dealer, indy and a convertible top shop couldn't figure out why, so I chose to replace the car rather than replace the top. The hydraulic pistons are known to start leaking at their seals and are very expensive to replace, and eventually the top will stop working if the fluid gets low until you top it up.
Good luck. Hate to say it because I loved my old 'vert, but the newer '04+ models are way more reliable and are much better to drive so you might want to take a look at some of them.
