Ignition Switch Locked

I have a 1999 9 3 with 254,850 miles on it. Have had the car since it was brand new. Took the car today to get an oil change and got a call from the mechanic asking if I had an extra key because the ignition switch wouldn't move. From time to time the switch will stay down after pulling the key out and the indicator chime goes off. I then put the key back in and the ignition switch will pop back up easily. I have never had a problem starting the car. When I got to the shop, the car was parked in reverse and I tried to start it, but the ignition switch was totally frozen. Can it just let go like that??? Any suggestions?
