the associated sounds are from the servo-motor type pack that pulls the hatch release. That is under the fabric of the hatch effectively behind the license plate on a 9-3 (I Think it's behind the light bar on my 900)
it has a long slot on it that pulls up on the hatch release, but when the servo recoils, there is 'slack' in the rod (similar to the door-handle rods to latch mechanism). So the servo only pulls to release, but doesn't push back to re-connect.
I don't know my way around there too well, but it sounds like that rod is getting stuck, probably in a mounting slide that has increased friction. I'd start by pulling the carpet and greasing any of the attachment features of that rod between the latch mechanism and the servo.
It is also possible that it is something in the latch portion itself, you'll probably have a good view of that from the back side as well with the carpet off.
