The type of test light that I use on those has a retractable spring loaded tip and a hook that grabs the wire. Then you push the tip through the insulation. I would think that Sears or any department store with tools would have one. You can check for power at the wire running down to the compressor from behind the right headlight. It's easiest to jump the AC relay so that you know power is going to the compressor wire.
You could also search "thermal switch". There are lots of posts about those.
