Major change in 2004. Posted by pokeyjoe [Email] (#3083) [Profile/Gallery] (more from pokeyjoe) on Fri, 6 Apr 2012 14:08:34 In Reply to: New Car suggestions, MichaelN, Fri, 6 Apr 2012 08:17:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The 2001-2003 convertibles have the Saab T-7 H engine and a GM chassis. In 2004, Saab went all GM with an Ecotec engine (same as Chevy Cobalt). The T-7 engines have sludge problems. Saab came out with several PCV fixes to address the problem. The latest is Update #6. You should check to see if it has been installed. Its is a preventitive fix, not a corrective one. If sludge was there before it was installed, and it hasn't been cleaned out, its still there. Sludge will cause oil starvation and engine failure. I have a 2000 9-3 that I bought a little while ago and it did not have the PVC update. It doesn't have any sludge either. If the previous owners were religious about oil changes (using synthetic oil), it may be OK.
