It has been posted on this BB that the 'mudflaps' under the car were originally to keep gravel and debri thrown up by the front tires from damaging or being lodged in the rear suspension (an idea from SAAB's rally days).
I had the 'mudflaps' under my 1984 SAAB 900T, but they are not under my 1998 SAAB 900SE. I hear that they were discontinued in 1997.
