I have had this happen on two different 1997 9000's and an Audi 5000. The plastic gets brittle from age and heat. It is not unusual, particularly for an older, higher mileage car. It's also very important never to over-tighten the hose clamps to the radiator.
I did the same thing you did once- reattached the hose to what was left. It worked it's way off after a month. I figured I could just reattach it, but the rest of the plastic broke off. It left me stranded at a very bad time, in a very uninhabited area. Thank god for AA.
So I would replace it. It's a real easy swap on a manual 9000, never tried it on a 9-3 auto. I can see by looking at my Viggen, it will be harder than a 9000, but it doesn't look too bad.
