I used the K&N 'drop-in' for 4 years in my stage 4 Nordic Viggen without issue. I recently switched to a GS open air without any change in performance and sound. IMO the K&N and the Open Air seem to perform the same and give you a bit better spool up then the OEM paper filter but I have no stats/proof to back that up. I've seen all the research done by others that says the K&N does nothing but filter out squirrels, and larger rodents, moose and such, but I'm not convinced. But both the K&N and Open Air give a nice sound and that's got to be worth something. Lastly, my engine isn't using oil so the injected acorns didn't damage anything.
I agree with other posters that the MAF is at risk if you over oil the filter and that's easy to do...a dusting/light pink is all you need! I haven't used the Open Air in the winter so I'll have to see how that goes otherwise I'll go back to the K&N.
