In the Saabs that the factory recommends 10/30 engine oil in the transmission ...... I use Amsoil 20/50 Series 2000 Race oil and have for quite some time. Its a proven winner by experience. Prior to the Amsoil ...I used Mobil1 15/50 It was great as the transmissions I used it in went 225 -250,000 miles before the pinions bearings started to die. This is the real kicker .... I have transmissions in customers cars that would have needed pinion bearings with in 30 - 60 days or the trans would have completly self destructed. I dropped out their old dirty thin engine oil that was in the transmission and installed Amsoil 20/50 series 2000.
The magic sound that Im keen to never progressed any further. In one case over 100,000 miles. I know for certain of internal condition as when I changed the fluid .... the drain plug has a magnitic head and it was mounded with more than the usual gray sludge as it had metal flakes stuck to it too.
I rebuilt a 88 900S trans on 2/17/94 at 102664 miles. It returned on 11/13/97 at 159765 miles for big service ..... no metal ... In fact no slude on the magnetic drain plug at all. I remember showing Ywan Mason who was standing right next to me ... we both went up front to examine the records. Customer claims Im the only tech that touched it in nearly 60,000 miles.
You have to trade some cold shift quality for some deep down protection.
