Hi Gary,
I think the ESP-M should be perfectly fine for your normal change interval. The "M" is for Mercedes, so you can be sure that it meets pretty severe standards. It meets one particular Mercedes spec, but it's applicable to both gasoline AND diesel engines, so the oil still has the better additive package normally associated with dual rated oils.
The ESP formula simply means they've taken steps to reduce "volatile" phosphorous (to address manufacturer concerns regarding catalyst "poisoning" in gasoline engines) & ash (to reduce particulate generation in diesels). In some cases they might use less volatile phosphorous compounds, & other times they might add different anti-wear compounds like molybdenum. But those additives are more expensive options, so you usually end up paying a higher price for the finished oil.
It sounds like the store ordered a bunch of ESP-M & couldn't move it, so you lucked out by finding it on sale! :-)
My local Advance Auto stores also carry M1 5W-40, but not at the same price as Wal-Mart. We are in a fairly agricultural area, so that may explain why. And being at altitude in CO means there's a large number of turbo-diesel pickups on the roads around here.
I've actually just switched from M1 5W-40 to M1 10W-40 High Mileage. I'm getting tired of paying 20% more for 5W-40, & 0W-40 is almost non-existant around here. The High Mileage 10W-40 provides dual rated ACEA A3/B3 protection & still has excellent cold flow for our northern CO winters.
