The RS4 is a borderline exotic, so no chance of comparing it to a Viggen.

An A4 could be a logical step from the Viggen. Economical, with a good choice of engines and plenty of room for low-cost tuning and upgrades.

I could write a ton about the S4, but the short answer is that the 3 different generations are perfect since you can have your choice of power plant. So gas mileage can be part of your decision, which means you'd probably skip the V8 one (B6/B7) and go for the older twin-turbo V6 (B5) or modern supercharged V6 (B8).
