The cable on the rear mount should be there unless it broke off. It is a permanent part of the mount and it I believe it prevents excessive movement while applying torque in reverse so I'd start with replacing that. The noise your getting may be the throwout bearing but don't despair; they often make noise for tens of thousands of miles before actually causing any issues. It may help to lube the input spline on the trans that the throwout bearing rides on. This can be done by popping off the small black plastic inspection cover on top of the bell-housing and first spraying a solvent and then an aerosol grease on the spline, taking care not to direct the grease towards the clutch disk. If you remove the cover, and use a flashlight and maybe an inspection mirror while your son pushes the clutch pedal in and out, you can see what goes on in there and where to aim the aerosol. Also, you'll need an extension wand on the sprays.
