Couple questions to clarify...
Can you not open the door, or not unlock the door?
If you can't open the door when pulling on the handles, than it's probably a mechanical piece broken (or disconnected) inside the door. If I recall correctly, a door should open even if locked from the inside - for safety reasons, in an accident, etc.
I've only ever played with the rear doors of my 5-door '97, haven't had to work with the fron yet, but it's usually mechanical bars that connect to the handle mechanisms that pull the door catch. If you pull the door card off (a few torx screws and plastic fasteners to remove the inside panel), you should be able to view the bracket assemblies, it's usually 1/4" steel rods going between the mechanical catches.
