It could be the ABS control unit (circuit board) beginning to fail. Or it could be as simple as the speed sensor (at the rear left passenger side wheel, I think) being gummed up with road grime/dirt.
If it is the ABS control unit, when it does fail, the ABS light will come and the speedometer will go completely dead as the signal from the speed sensor goes directly through the ABS unit. The car still drives, but you do not have ABS or a working speedometer at that point. While a new ABS control unit is very expensive part new ($900-$1000), the way they typically fail is just a bad solder joint or two and BBA Remanufacturing in Massachusetts does a great job repairing them for about $260 or so. When mine failed on my 2000 9-3 a couple of years ago, I sent it to them FedEx and asked them to ship it back FedEx an they turned it all around in 2 days.
I don't know your DIY level, but if you are OK with unplugging a cable or two and removing a few screws, you can remove and reinstall the ABS control module yourself. It is a little tricky to reach 2 of the 6 screws, but if you search this forum, somebody had a tip on one other part that if you remove it first makes it much easier to get to the screws. That is how I removed mine to send off to BBA for repair.
