The latte on the dipstick

I just picked up a '00 9-3 SE with immaculate service records and 196K on the clock. M1 oil every 5K miles, and lots of highway miles due to the PO's commute. It's a southern car and looks fantastic. Runs great and needs a couple little things, but is a solid car. It's the replacement for a 9K that died in accident in December.
On the 1000 mile trip from the south back up here to the frozen north, I checked the oil and there was some of the dreaded beige gunk on the dipstick. A bit at the bottom and a bit at the top of the plastic end, and a little residue on the wire part of the stick. No big collection of the stuff around the cap.
The coolant level is not dropping and there is no oil in the coolant. The PCV #6 mod was done at 120K miles, in January 2008. Does the PCV #6 mod require any servicing, like cleaning out the oil trap or something? I'm not sure just how the PCV mod works, so any input is welcome as I trouble shoot.
So if I'm lucky, maybe a PCV check valve is bad, or a hose in the PCV mod is split or leaking. Or maybe I need to retorque the head bolts, which was done at 62K miles. If I do that I'll put in new bolts.
What else should I be looking at, other than the biggie of a head gasket replacement? (which I really don't want to do!)
Thanks for any input. I don't know the 9-3 like I know the 9K.
