I checked the oil filter while the noise was happening the other day. The filter was not vibrating. Interestingly when I was underneath the car, it sounded like it was coming from the bottom left side of the engine (vs top left when I checked with the hood open). The last few times I've done a cold start, the noise hasn't occurred. I'm not sure if maybe it has to do with somewhat warmer weather, or the switch to Mobil 1 0W-40 a couple of weeks ago finally having an effect. I also asked the mechanic I recently had replace the serpentine belt/pulleys about dropping the oil pan. He suggested trying Marvel Mystery Oil before having him do something as labor intensive as dropping the pan. He said they used MMO quite often with good results. When I asked him about Auto RX, he said he'd heard of it but never used it. I've found some posts about MMO, none particularly negative, although most people seem to like Auto RX. Does anybody have an opinion about using MMO vs Auto RX?
