Intermit no start, lights come on, no crank..ignition?

Hey guys,
'99 9-3 here, 158k mi.
I am getting an intermittent no start condition. It has happened on 2 occasions in the last month or 2...and I can always eventually get it started after a minute or a few minutes. I'll turn the key, and the lights/dash come on like usual in the acc position, and then I'll go to start it, and nothing. No crank at all...much like a totally dead battery (but the lights are on). It seems as if the ignition switch is not making a good connection in its final position to start the car. If I jiggle it, or just try a few times, I can get it started after 10 or so attempts...and then I have no problems for a few weeks.
I'm guessing this is a faulty ignition switch? Now that I think about it, over the last few years I have occasionally also had what I call a delayed start - I'd turn the key to the start position, get nothing at all, wait a few seconds, and then the engine would crank and start.
PS I can deal with this intermittent condition until I get around to fixing it - but do these things typically totally fail? I just don't want to risk being stranded somewhere.
Thanks!!
Alex
