Thanks for your response Noel!
Went by my mechanic to look at my 98 subaru that is in the shop for a head gasket and discuss the symptoms with him and he stated the same thing. Strong evidence to suggest that, but stated that the proper tests should be done to make sure.
He quoted me around 800 to 900 to do everything (take out turbo and clean lines, have heads inspected by machine shop, etc. etc.) Of course if the heads needed to be machined or replaced the cost would go up. Sounds like a good price. I trust this guy completely. For instance the gasket for my subaru he ordered that came in was not a Subaru OEM and he over nighted the OEM gasket. So he is really straight forward and honest.
I guess the only silver lining is that I could get the timing chain performed since I have no idea when it was done and maybe the water pump?
Do you know if valve stems could be replaced easily during a head gasket replacement or would that be a extra labor?
Can a bad head gasket produce the other symptoms like strange engine knock and the turbo to go all screwy?
Thanks again!
