Scott R. know this as well: About two, maybe three months ago my 97 900SET had not broken it's cable, but kept sticking and the self-adjust mechanism just wasn't working. I wound up power shift -- not for the faint of heart. Basically revving the engine to match the output shaft speed to the rolling transmission speed to shift. If you have to stop, take it out of gear, turn the car off, engage 1st gear, restart when light is green. Oh, and wait for a bronco ride at first...
Basically I slather lithium grease on the cable and mechanism every once in a while. This is located right under the under-hood fuse box on the driver's side. The fuse box can easily be moved out of the way for access.
My '88 and earlier Saabs had hydraulic clutches, natch the '98's on do, too. Makes me wish I had it back.
Anyway, good luck and happy Saabing!
Jim M.
