A thrown rod means an engine replacement, if you want to continue driving the car. The remaining piece of the rod usually gouges the inside of the cylinder, just trashes the whole thing. So your decision as to whether to keep the car or not depends on its overall condition, and how cheaply you can get a replacement engine. Your best source would be a car that is being parted out for a problem unrelated to the engine (eg., rear end collision, transmission destroyed, rusted out).
