The problem has happened 3 times now, but not every time I’ve driven it . . . 1) During a short drive it died in the middle of the road after stopping at a stop sign – the only strange thing I noticed just before it quit running was that it acted like it didn’t want to accelerate when I pressed the gas as I was accelerating from a stopped position – there seemed to be no typical alternator type failure indications such as dimming lights or gauges, etc. After coasting to the side of the road I tried to crank it but got nothing – no turning over or near cranking – the windows would not work and the tow driver had to charge the battery just to put the car in neutral. After the 1st time, it was towed to my local mechanic who checked the alternator and battery and found the alternator OK but the battery needing a charge. Not knowing what it was he returned it to me and a few drives later the second problem occurred.
2) After driving about 5 hours straight mostly at night and while using the defroster and windshield wipers off and on and stopping and starting at stop signs and lights, and restarting for refueling it died in the middle of the highway – I was a passenger at the time and the driver claims all the gauges went “nuts” and it just died while going 65 mph – again, there seemed to be no alternator type failure signs. This time we were out of town and had to call for roadside assistance and when the wrecker service showed up the driver charged the battery and the car cranked but died the same way a few miles down the road. After a second charge we were able to make it to a local auto parts store where it was charged again and hooked up to a machine to test the alternator which they said was reading about “11”. Later, after receiving a full charge and test “running” for more than 20 minutes the mechanic determined it probably wasn’t the alternator but rather some kind of short he couldn’t locate. At this point it was parked and not driven for 72 hours, while we rented a car and drove to our original destination.
3) After turning in the rental car, we attempted to drive the Saab home to my local repair shop but after going about 150 miles without stopping except for a few stop lights it died again all of a sudden while going about 70 mph. Once again, I had to get roadside assistance and after a charge it cranked and ran for a while but we decided to have it towed home and not risk another problem. I hope this information helps you better evaluate the problem – thanks for the help and concern!
