Easy (well somewhat) way to check if the leak is around the tail lights is to pull back the hatch liner at the rear to get to where you can see and feel the area around the lights. Then fold down the rear seat, climb into the hatch and have someone run water from a garden hose down the back of the closed hatch to simulate rain running down the back. Then look and feel for any water seeping in around the tail lights. If so, you may just need to replace the gasket and add some silicone caulk.
