Say the clutch was good -- doubt it unless it was just done. You'd need to replace transmission fluid, and at least 4 hours. The job isn't too bad once you've done it and there are good directions on-line. You could do it yourself. Tough spots: breaking loose the bolts that hold up the sub-frame, might need more that just a breaker bar; separating the ball joints (a good whack with a hammer when they are hanging on subframe usually works, otherwise can damage ball joint covers which are a pain and cost $20 each; need a cross-frame engine support; might find damaged engine/transmission mounts; loosen both fill and drain plugs on replacement transmission while out of car; advice to replace clutch system or at least evaluate carefully; and the linkage is a little tricky the first time through (you'd have to know when the car was in 4th gear and align inside car and at transmission). I've heard $1200 for clutch job that includes $400 of parts so you probably could have it put in for $600.
