Phil, I agree the distributor is likely the source of the problems you describe. I recently had the same problem. I considered replacing only the shaft seal in the distributor but an exact replacement was not to be found. Or at leat. Not easy to find. If you search the site you will find some advice on seals that are close and advice on how to do the work. I took the throw money at it approach and bought a rebuilt unit from NAPA. Problem solved. Be sure to keep the plastic dust shield as it will not come with the new distributor. A new one can be had but shipping is way more than the new piece. The distributor is a Bosch and you may be able to find the seal at a VW dealer. NAPA will want your old unit in exchange. Replacement of the distributor is easy as it only fits in one way and is held in by one bolt.
