Dennis and Robert were correct that you can remove the speakers from the top by carefully removing the grill and then removing the screws holding the speaker.
Once you get the speaker out, you will see that the speaker wire connects to the speaker with a custom GM type connector plug. Any new speaker that you use will likely just have two flat spade connectors so you will either need to get an adapter that can connect the GM connector on the wire to the spade plugs....or you could do like I did to just remove the GM connector and solder the speaker wires to the spade connectors. Either way it is not very difficult if you have the tools.
