Upper idler pulley fail but so does the water pump so you just need to hone in on which one it is before buying parts.

With a stethoscope you just need to move around until you hear the same sound loudest as what made you concerned in the first place.

Sound and vibrations travels well so when it is the water pump, you might very well hear the same sound from power steering pump and A/C compressor but it is the loudest at water pump.
