There are repairs, which is when something breaks; and maintenance, which is basic care and feeding and stuff you know sooner or later wears out or dies.

When a car is new to you, get up to speed on all it needs, take care of that stuff and do normal maintenance, maybe a bit of over-maintaining. And you'll be good.

To start, go through the car thoroughly, preferably on a lift so you can see everything. Takes notes.
Look at all you can find on the previous history of the car, so you know when things might be due. Then you can plan. These are very reliable cars if you follow a maintenance schedule.

Back in February I bought a '00 9-3 SE with 198K on it. I had a complete history of the car and it was in excellent shape, thanks to a detail-oriented owner. The records and the previous owner told me I would be due for a water pump, serp belt and pulleys, plugs, and front seal. So I got it home (1,000 miles) and over a few weeks had all that taken care of, plus a new oil pump. Now it still has a couple things to do but it's been 4000 miles and all seems well.

I was looking at the repair records on my 9K yesterday. Has 204K on it and I've had it since 90K, almost 10 years. Other than oil changes, I've done almost nothing on that car in the past year. It needs some minor things at the moment, but nothing expensive or likely to strand me (as long as I do the serp belt and pulleys, which are due).

Ditto on the other 2 Saabs in the driveway.
