Shifter problems just took a turn for the worse :( Posted by Nicholas [Email] (#2995) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nicholas) on Mon, 5 Aug 2013 20:09:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well, my ongoing shifter woes with the 2000 9-3 have returned, but this time it seems whatever was breaking has finally "broke".
Brief history. The car has had trouble getting into reverse (must roll backward, and play around a lot with the stick) for a LONG time now. It also seems to me the reverse problem has gotten a bit worse. The car has also recently had intermittent problems with shifting altogether. Basically, it would not shift into any gear with the car running and clutch engaged. Felt like a "wall" between the stick and the gears. I thought I solved this , or temporarily solved, with an "overnight trick" bleed on the clutch ... although now I'm beginning to think that may have been just coincidental. Not sure.
Today, ironically while changing the tires and 30 minutes from home, I again found myself frustrated trying to get the car in reverse. I may have jammed the stick a bit hard a few times as I usually do, and I think I felt something "snap" just before the car fell into reverse in a loose/easy feeling way. Later on, the shop guys said they could not get it into reverse again, and when I got in the car while on the jack to try, I could then feel something was very wrong with the shifter.
Basically, I went from shifting all gears, to a completely limp stick. Ran across the street to buy tools to perform shifter alignment because I figured the bolt/collar had come loose there from all the times I've aligned. Performing alignment again seemed to make zero difference. I wound up driving the car home having only 3,4,5 gears. When the stick is clicked into reverse , the car actually appears to also be in 4th. After I click into any gear, the stick will still flop from side to side, and there is no longer any tension in neutral to hold the stick up. It's again as if the two "sides" of the shifter range are unreachable. Although I could never completely confirm it, it seemed from many frustrating shifter alignments that I was able to improve reverse shifting, although since it never worked well consistently, I don't know for sure. No gear grinding, just now loss of 1,2, and reverse, and a completely limp stick.
As before , the clutch appears to engage/disengage well and all the same. I've long suspected the shifter, linkage, or gearbox to be the culprit of all my various shift problems ... but it seems I always get tracked into "it's the clutch" when asking about any shift related problems like this.
Really at a loss now. With the current damage/condition, how can I troubleshoot this to confirm or eliminate the shifter, linkage, and/or gearbox as being the problem here? Of course, I also want to know if it is indeed the clutch system, but as of yet, I don't understand how the clutch could be faulty given these problems. Thanks much for any ideas!
