I was sort of in the same position a while ago but I didn't pull the trigger on getting the car.
But, I think you have to look at what you put into versus what you'll be able to get out of it when the work is completed.
Start with the bearings. Heck, $125 isn't even a car payment so it can't hurt. You might end up going the rebuilt route once you get into it so be prepared with a cost limit.
If the car is nice and could last another 100,000 miles, I'd go ahead and pull the engine and spend the grand.
