Thank you, Anders. It was a real ordeal.
1. The sleeve was firmly stuck in there. I tried knocking it out with a punch, with a brass rod, with a socket, no luck. I tried pounding it out with a 3/8 diam. steel rod, no luck. It literally would not move. I tried to pry it out as you described, and pulled the top edge away from the tube, but then only chips of metal came off in my pliers.
2. I ended up drilling it out. After a few tries, about a half-inch of the remaining sleeve came out on the drill bit.
3. Then I test-fitted the new mast and sleeve. It would no go in. The tube was exactly .375 inch ID, and the sleeve was .375-.376 inch OD. I had to drive 30-miles round trip to get a 9.9mm (25/64) drill bit to expand the tube. One I had done that, the mast and sleeve dropped in smoothly. The rest of the installation was simple, and now it is done. But this job took a total of 6 hours.
I am pretty sure that the old mast was an aftermarket replacement. First it was chrome, while eeuroparts says the OEM mast for this car was black. Second, one of the mounting points in the trunk is mostly stripped out, indicating a ham-handed mechanic overtorqued the screw into the sheet metal. If the mast and sleeve were so tight, I wonder how they got them installed in the first place.
It sure felt good to see the antenna go up and down all the way.
