Belt woes.

Hi Guys.
2001 9-3 HO SE, 172k, automatic.
This summer I bypassed a failing AC comp. with a short belt. Part number 6pk1850 which seemed to be the go-to belt for this bypass. Well, I noticed a few months back the belt seemed top be wearing oddly. Well, to no surprise it failed last night. 8k after replacement.
No biggy, I was expecting it and I was prepared.
My question to you guys is WHY do you think the belt failed? This time I went with a better brand belt (Dayco vs. Duralast) and it seems it might be a bit longer? I feel like there is less tension. The belt seems to be rotating smoother and seems quieter.
I am going to keep a close eye on it and I have a spare belt in the trunk with my jack and tools.
Any observations, experience, ideas would be huge.
As always, Thanks Guys.
