wheel assembly and the steering column. You have to take out the airbag and take the wheel off, and you will see the clockspring sitting there. Don't forget to disconnect the wires behind the airbag before yanking the wheel off.
Be careful as the clockspring assemblies are fragile. Don't turn it too far in one direction or you can end up ripping the ribbon cable up. If the replacement is not centered, carefully wind all the way to one end, counting the turns (4-5 probably). Then wind it back half that distance (2-2.5 turns) to center it. Then put it on the steering column. Make sure your wheels and steering wheel are straight ahead before you take the steering wheel off.
Also, make sure you disconnect the battery before starting, and let 30 minutes of so go by before you start working to allow any residual charge in the system die off. You don't want an airbag going off due to shorting it out while you have your face in there.
It's a relatively simple job to do the exchange, just with a few caveats to remember to make sure it's successful. You could also find someone with a Tech II to read the code and find out specifically what the car thinks the issue is.
Mark :-)
