I have a '99 with 196K miles. Back in April while crusing on the interstate 20 miles from home my oil light came on. Had the car towed to my indy Saab guy who dropped the pan & told me the intake screen was 100% gunked / sludged up. Berings tested out so they cleaned up the screen & the car was good for a few months. Then one day once the car was good & warm I started getting the oil light at idle. I figured the screen was gunking up again, & the likely culpret was crap working its way loose from the top of the engine. Not wanting to spend the money to drop the pan again, the car being 14 years old with almost 200K miles, I figured trying an 'alternative' method couldn't hurt, espcially as I don't drive that car a lot anymore (my commute is just a few miles to the train station plus local errands). So I tried an oil additive, in my case Kreen, to try to disolve what ever was gunking up the screen. Especially as I don't drive the car a lot, it took a while but slowly I was able to drive longer before the oil light came on, and I haven't seen it in a while (the longest drive I've done is 20 miles). During this process I was very careful how far I would drive the car, but on the short trips I made sure to take some 'long' routes where I could to help make sure the engine did warm up some to help the 'disolving' process & hopefully loosen up & bring down more gunk / sludge while I have the addative in the oil.

When I get the oil changed I'm planning on trying something with a high detergent mix like Mobile 1 high mileage.

Based on others comments on this board it sounds like the screen might be right above the oil plug, so one might be able to see it without dropping the pan. It also seems some have fashioned brushes to reach up & clean the screen.
