Note on ignition cover removal Posted by TimN [Email] (#2379) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TimN) on Tue, 7 Jan 2014 13:55:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The other day the reverse lock-out mechanism on my son's 1999 9-3 stuck and the ignition locked. Hoping that electrical contact cleaner would clean and open it, I sprayed the cylinder copiously. But no. And so using platanoff (http://photo.platonoff.com/Auto/20070617a.Saab_NG900_Shifter_Housing_Removal/) as a guide, I dug into the assembly to remove the reverse lock.
This post is to make a note on the ignition lock cover removal. Platanoff is not really correct when he says to pry it off. That is valid for NG900s. But the way to do it for the 9-3 is to rotate the rubber cover about 10 or so degrees clockwise. This will release the two clips. Then pull up and swivel back. It may be tight but you shouldn't have to pry it. Also, you are in big trouble if you break the antennae or electronics under the rubber cover. It is your key transponder sensor. I'm sure that this antennae pick-up a generic piece that can be swapped between any 9-3. But I may be wrong. Does this unit have to match your key transponder frequency?
At the auto parts store I purchased some graphite powders to sprinkle into the ignition cylinder. Two clerks simultaneously said "well at least you didn't spray it with WD-40". They went on to tell stories about how many ignition switches were junked up by WD-40 messing the electrical contacts.
Other than being nervous about destroying the transponder electronics, the job wasn't difficult. Many years ago I had done something similar on a 1990 900. The 9-3 is much easier to take apart.
Unrelated question - I also am changing the water pump on my 2000 9-5. The banjo bolt attached to the pump only had one copper gasket. I thought they were supposed to have two. Would it matter if I added one?
Thanks,
TimN
