I've got a 2000 SE and a 2006 2.0 SC and I would say these are pretty different cars.

Like others have said, the ng 9-3 has a great chassis, there are practically no sludge issues, no disappearing pixels on the SID, and I think they are generally considered reliable cars.

However, the old generation excels in ergonomics and functionality, and it undoubtedly has more character. The ng 9-3 was built to be a 'normal car'.

While more old-fashioned, the interior quality is much higher in the og 9-3. The plastics used were heavy and solid compared to the thin and crispy plastics of the ng. In the ng, you a have a feeling that parts will drop off any moment. I've only had the ng car for two months, but I find the placement of some buttons disturbing. The steering wheel blocks the view to some buttons, like the night panel button, which is plain dangerous.

The og 9-3 has more body roll and is more sensitive to unbalanced or worn tires. However, with a Genuine Saab steering rack brace, a thicker rear sway bar, and new Michelin Super Sport tires the car feels really great: solid and precise handling.

The og 9-3 is a hatchback though not as well executed as the C900 or 9000 hatches. Still it's amazingly versatile and functional.

Which one would I recommend? I honestly don't know! The ng might be an overall better car but the og has more charm.
