How did my cruise cable cause my stuck throttle? Posted by IanC [Email] (#139) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IanC) on Tue, 10 Jun 2014 17:51:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I experienced a stuck throttle today while driving my 1999 9-3 Vert. I had turned into a shopping center with a long access road up a hill when it happened. I accelerated from the turn and when I came off the throttle the car kept going. Using a combination of clutch, ignition key, and lugging the engine in a high gear I was able to keep the speed down until I got to a safe place to park.
Upon investigation, the black plastic piece on the cruise control cable had pulled back through the mounting plate and then the back side of the plastic piece cantilevered so that the throttle had constant tension. If I posted the image link right, the bottom cable is the one that stuck.
Anyone know how this happened? I can't remember the last time I used the cruise control and it was not even on when this happened. All I can think of is that the cable bound up a bit and the throttle pushed the plastic piece through its mounting hole instead of the cable sliding like it should have. I lubed things up as best I could and then drove gingerly home.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
