Hi,

I've got a '97SET with a dead engine, and looking at purchasing a '99 (2.0t) with a weak transmission. Same color body 4dr, so looking at keeping the '97 for a parts car (understanding suspension, and many other things not a direct fit, but still a T5).
I haven't driven the car yet, but trying to do my homework before driving hour+ to go look at it.
She said that 3rd grinds a bit if you try to put it in gear quickly, so I'm thinking synchro, and I'm not up for a transmission rebuild myself just now. So I"m thinking of trying to go gentle on it for a while, even skipping 3rd if I have to for my 8 mile commute for a few months, and then swap the transmission when life settles down a bit this fall.

I know many recommend upgrading the 900's to the hydraulic clutch anyway, so can I put an older transmission into the newer car with the hydraulic clutch? Anything that doesn't work or fit?
(body is much better on the 9-3 as well, otherwise I'd look at swapping the engine into the older 900).

Any thoughts, as always, greatly appreciated.
