The 2000 9-3 I deal with is 2 hours away at the moment, but I think this will work, at least if the BPV is at fault.
Take the small hose off the BPV, then put one on that you can suck on. You should not be able to get any air through the hose when you suck on it. If you do, the internal valve in the BPV is not seating or is worn out and you need to replace the unit. They last a long time. I replaced one on my 9K about 10 years and 127K miles ago and it's still fine.
