This post kind of hit a nerve as I just went through another one of the worst days of my life with my SAAB (as I have with my other vehicle), due to another bad dealer and body shop experience. Actually , it was the same dealer, as there is and has been only one in the area for years.
I'm 41 years old, and through the new and used vehicles I've owned. Through the warranty and out of warranty, I've almost never, and I mean never, found anything close to good service at any place other than a good indy mechanic and of course yours truly. The closest indy for my SAAB is about a 2-3 hour drive from me.
Nowadays, it seems like the dealers and all of the "big shops" for any car or all cars, are just like organized crime outfits. They hire lots of poorly skilled careless people , and then when they break stuff and make it worse, the management does nothing but lie and worse to try to cover it up and force the customers to pay pay pay. If the money and breakage on your important transportation isn't bad enough ... just going through this can bring many people to tears. It's extremely frustrating , and these people are completely careless. They always act as if they are doing you a favor by ripping you off. Even worse, you have not much remedy when being ripped off by any repair outfit. Loudmouth attorneys and people that don't know will tell you that you do, but it's not true. If there is no big personal injury or some way for an attorney to make a lot of money, then your are on your own with them. Always remember that and be on the defensive when dealing with them from the very start - if you must deal with them.
As others have said. Do what you can yourself and/or find a good indy for anything else. Beyond that, I avoid consulting with anyone about my car. This time around it was a seemingly simple insurance claim where I had no educated choice in the matter, and it would seem I've again paid a dear price for this. They even cut off my rental car before giving me time to get my car back, and then charged the credit card I used for deposit without my permission. It's rough out there. Trust me.
