My neighbor for 8 years was a dealer mechanic. We did a bunch of personal HG jobs. If the car was running right, not using oil he just checked the head for warpage. He used a Bluepoint straightedge. Did the gasket and that was it. When he did the job at the dealer they would send the head out for a light surfacing, valve guide seals and a valve touch up. He said they used a machine shop that knew how to just 'kiss' the valves to clean up any carbon deposits. NEVER did valve guides. We had a couple warped heads. You pretty well knew when that happened. Those were the cars that lost their coolant and were still driven till they died.
