Short drive, 70 degrees outside, noticed engine cooling fan on after ignition was turned off. About a liter of coolant under car in about 30 min. Triangular dashboard warning w/ SID message: Check Coolant level. Car parked. Thermometer on dash has been SLOW to register and sometimes drops to L even when engine is normal temperature.
2 hrs later. Car started and drove normally. No lights or SID messages but dashboard thermometer showed L rather at 9'o'clock position.
Checked coolant reservoir within 5 minutes--normal level. Restarted OK, no lights. Drove 10 minutes at about 50. Loud "pop". Triangle light illuminated pulled over, lots of steam from left side of hood, trail of anti-freeze on ground and under car. Dashboard thermoeter remains at L. Reservoir is empty, top radiator hose, radiator and reservoir cap appear intact.
Will return to car in daylight tomorrow AM. What blew? Plan to replace thermostat with new one. Anything else?
