I usually figure $1100- $600 in parts- rings, bearings, timing kit, $500 in service- The crank is turned due to normal bearing wear, not
oil starvation. Then just use the + size bearings
its about $100 for boiling and magnafluxing the block- worthwhile especially if you don't know the history of it- have them measure the cylinders and advise you.
Honing you can do yourself. Simple, fun and satisfying. Youtube has good how to videos. HF has a cheap hone that has worked for me.
I used to just hand over the complete head, but now I take it all apart to save some money. they also let me reassemble it under their guidance,
I have the valves and seats cut, head skimmed flat, leak tested.
Also, take apart the tappets and clean them. Another satisfying job- keep them in order.
On my next one, I am going to pick up a soda blaster to clean all the parts. Shop said this would be ok on a head- unlike a sand blaster that could leave behind hard media.
Dont forget to look at platinoff's website. Its a fabulous guide.
This board has given me fabulous advice too!
