Replaced the head bolts on the Viggen tonight Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 18 Mar 2015 16:48:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The car is a 2000, so just to be extra careful I bought a set of head-bolts and new Elring Valve cover gasket last year. After 15 years the old VC gasket may be bad anyway. Tonight I finally got the bolts installed.
I didn't know what to expect in the cam galleys since the car had the factory original PCV system on it when I bought the car in August 2013 with 63K miles. Some varnishing due to age and oil choices but it looks very clean to me!
Two issues. Some Nimrod had removed the Valve Cover previously and smeared blue Loctite or RTV on the gasket surface. The material never set hard and I can rub it off with finger pressure. I was careful to capture every bit that remained on the head's sealing surface. You can see the VC side in the photo below. Didn't use it to hold the gasket in the grooves, just used it to seal between the gasket and the head.
The other issue was that someone (maybe the same Nimrod) had buggered the external Torx head of bolt #4 (firewall side between cylinders 1 and 2) so that my E16 socket would not fit! In case you ever find yourself in a similar jam, a 6-point 14mm socket will fit the buggered head of a E16
bolt.
Bolt #9, the firewall bolt past cylinder 4, was the loosest of the ten. Adding the extra 90 degrees of twist to bolts #9 and #10 proved to be a challenge! I don't know if the bolts were original but they had an extremely rancid odor upon removal. That might indicate which bolt coating was used and might pinpoint the bolts' age.
