Well, now that we are past the" differences" part of your question, I would advise you to look at any 1997 1/2 and newer 900. The thing that distinguishes the 971/2 is that it was OE'd with both synthetic gearbox oil and synthetic PS fluid, as well as other upgrades--certainly if you are looking at a CV this IS the dividing line between quality issues.
Obviously miles play a large part in your decision, plus you have a budget in mind of whay you want to pay.
In addition, it seems the hydraulic clutch cars have had fewer issues with leaks, not to mention smoother on the take up.
I was NOT attempting to diss the 1996 SET(that I posted a little earlier) rather I thought you wanted to really know what (some) of the differences are.
We have all read owners posts here frustrated with the 9-3 and NG 900. The biggest problems with the early cars was in reliability issues and low grade of materials. The grades of rubber and plastics specifically and more. Now if you live in Arizona, these quality lapses became noticable much sooner than to those of us living in Michigan.
In my own example, my 1996 NG 900 was a huge improvement to me at the time over the previous 1991 9000 that I was driving. In the same comparative, the 1999 9-3 HOT is a huge leap in better quality than the 1996 ---and I figure I 'otta know because not many owners will sit behind the same dashboard in 2 consecutive cars. My 9-3 has had very little to beef about. Conversely, others' experiences offer a polar opposite to my view.
But things should get better as the model years go by.
Suggestion is to get the VIN from the SAAB you are interested in and have your SAAB Dealer print out all repairs in its VIN history. Then make the best decision you can.
Regards,
