Brakes caliper rebuild (update on my brake job) Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Fri, 31 Jul 2015 16:15:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I did this job on my Viggen that hasn't seen any snow. Original brakes. They were really really really right to the end of their life, but still performed well.
Anyway, the piston was essentially all the way out. I had to press it with a pair of channel lock pliers. Guess what? It slipped and I caused a little tear on the rubber boot. About 4-5mm on one side...and then about 1-2mm on the other side (I even used duct tape to protect it and it still happened). There should be a special tool to do this...
Anyway, I got some gel super glue, cleaned the area well and placed some on the tear. Then, I compressed the piston all the way back. I *think* and am pretty sure it should be okay, given the car doesn't see nasty road conditions and I drive it little. But, I'd feel a heck of a lot better replacing the boot.
How hard is it to do? Can I do it myself? Better left for someone else? Does the boot mainly prevent dirt from getting in? If s, I think it should be okay for now...it's sealed and compressed back into the cylinder.
Very annoying that this happened...since I have to remove the caliper yet again.
Otherwise, it was a pretty nice job. Still hard physically, but the jacking and everything worked well. To get the caliper bolts on, I had my mom come out and hold the steering wheel so that the discs would point as outward as possible.
