Never owned a NG900 auto tranny car, so use these suggestions at your own risk.
As you probably know, water is an auto tranny killer, and it doesn't take much or a long time, and it is not easy to get it all out. In this situation, changing the tranny and torque converter for a junkyard used one probably is most cost effective fix for a 1996 car. Some junkyards offer extended warranties beyond standard 30 days for extra $. Might also want to send sample of used tranny oil to an oil analysis lab for water content for $25. Have used lab in link below for oil analysis.
If engine stalls when taking out of Park or Neutral, torque converter lockup may be engaging. To isolate tranny computer that controls this, I think it's possible to disconnect tranny computer from its harness under dash and drive car manually changing gears IF the hydraulics and clutches/band/servos etc. were not damaged.
