Stalling with a warm engine is typically the EVAP purge valve, or vacuum line going to the throttle body. The purge valve sits on the passengers fender wall near the suspension mount (assuming this is a left hand drive car, not a vehicle from the UK). Some people have reported being able to clean it so that it open/closes properly, but I had to replace mine to clear a CEL. Since you don't have a code for the evap fuel system, this might not be the cause, or it hasn't been going on long enough to trigger one. I would still give all the vacuum lines a good look over to see if you have any holes or splits. It's a pretty old car and these rubber hoses wear out.

The fuel mileage issue I don't have a great suggestion. I haven't run 87 octane in my '99 since '01 when I had a tank of gas that gave me similar symptoms (bad mileage, poor performance). I had a long highway drive and figured I wouldn't be needing the additional turbo power. Was I wrong! I rarely use anything but 93 these days, but will occasionally use 89 if they don't have 93 or it's a 40 cent difference from 89. For the 15-16 gallon fill up it only add's $2-4 dollars for a tank. Not worth it to me to use the 87/89. For some reason my Saab gets better mileage on 89, but with my tune the 93 makes more sense.

If you haven't changed the plugs recently, put in a fresh set of NGK resistors (BCPR7ES). Make sure your ignition cassette is not a cheap Chinese knockoff.
