We have a 97 Passat TDI. We can get close to 50mpg US on long trips. The TDI was not integrated into the 98+ Passats, at least in N. America. You can get this engine in the Jetta and Bug. I think that the power has being increased to.
Low end torque is great. It gets a bit lean at highway speeds. A K&N air filter helps. This engine can be shipped for +25% HP. Rated at 90hp sounds qhite wimpy, but it is quite fast in city driving. The red line is relatively low.
It is a comfortable car on long trips. Seats are ok for long trips too.
The exhaust is quite loud already. You do not need a sport muffler.
It uses around 1/2 liter of oil per month. Diesls do use lots of oil.
There is a timing belt, and it is expensive to get changed.
The oil filter is difficult to get at. You have to remove a plastic panel that covers the bottom of the engine. 5 fasteners.
Use Shell's Rotella 15-40
This car makes sense if you are racking up the miles. If you don't have the miles, perhaps the pain and expense ietms are not worth it.
If you get it, have your wife take it in for service some day, and ask them to change the spark plugs! ;-)
