Head gasket time...getting most for my money

Time for a head gasket on my 1996 900SET with 304,000 miles. My friends that have a VW shop are set to do the job for about $1,000. Before I blindly say yes, I want to make sure the investment is at least somewhat worth it. I've owned the car since 1999 and 79,000 miles and it's not pretty, but I love it.
What should I have them check that might sway my decision...Rust (NE car from 1996-2004)? Sludge? Other things that would kill the car beyond repair? Also, if I pull the trigger, what else should I have them do/check while they're doing the job?
In the last few years it's had new alternator, battery, control arms, brake pads, tires, a/c clutch, spark plugs, pcv, vacuum lines, radiator, and other things I can't think of.
Thanks for any advice!
