My guess, it's the start function of the ignition switch. A common enough problem, at least for me over the years since 1976. New switch would fix it, but I never bothered, but always bypassed the switch's function by powering the solenoid directly with a dash mounted momentary-on push button. This also bypasses safety switches, and cranks engine. If ignition is on, engine will crank and start. My wife has had this problem for years in her 92 900S automatic convertible. Her push button is a hastily contrived (and suitably connected) wine cork inserted into the lighter socket. Works so well that I never installed a store bought push button.
If you have a neutral safety sw problem, it would still crank in park, and I'm sure you've tried that and it didn't work.
Other than that, the solenoid's connector occasionally gets disconnected by blind gropes into that area. Not too likely.
